My first week at Oxford University was very eventful! After my first day, our class went on a tour of Oxford. We saw things like the Radcliffe Camera, the Bodleian Library, the Sheldonian Theatre, the Divinity School and other various things. My favorite stop was the Divinity School, where some scenes from Harry Potter were filmed!
On the first Wednesday, my medicine class took an educational visit to London. We went to the Wellcome Collection and the Alexander Fleming Laboratory, where penicillin was discovered in 1928. My favorite exhibit at the Wellcome Collection was the slice of human that they had displayed in a piece of glass (yes it was a real human!). The penicillin exhibit was interesting because the discovery story was really fascinating.
All the lessons were interesting! My schedule basically went like this: I had two morning lessons everyday broken up by a 30-minute break. Then, some days, we had afternoon workshops where we would learn about different diseases. We often made posters on the stuff that we were learning—including a poster on Schizophrenia.
That week we also went on a tour of the Magdalen College. It was a pretty college with interesting architecture. We went inside a cathedral building that had a lot of gorgeous stained glass windows. Outside there was a quad, which had bushes of large white flowers that surrounded the edges. It really looked like a scene straight out of "Alice in Wonderland." We then took a path to the Fellows Garden along the river. After the tour, we had a little bit of free time so two friends and I went exploring Oxford and went to get milkshakes at Moo Moo’s.
On Saturday, the entire campus went to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour and went behind the scenes of the Harry Potter film series. Some exhibits that I saw included The Great Hall, the Gryffindor common room, Dumbledore’s office, the potions classroom, Platform 9¾, the Forbidden Forest and the Dursley house. I bought a mug of Butterbeer for me and some candy from Honeydukes for my brothers.
The two weeks ended too soon—and it was graduation day! It was a great two weeks of learning new things and making new friends, but I’m also looking forward to exploring London more with my mom!
